Title II, Part D Discretionary Grant
Enhancing Education Through Technology
This proposal was submitted to Texas Education Agency for a Title II, Part D - Enhancing Education Through Technology - discretionary grant. In Texas, the program is called TARGET - Technology Applications Readiness Grants for Empowering Texas). 

Every state receives an allotment for this program from the federal government (U.S. Department of Education). By law, a portion of the funds must be distributed to school districts as "entitlement" or "formula" grants and the rest must be distributed through a competitive grant process. Every state's requirements will be somewhat different so it is very important to read the Request for Proposal closely and follow the instructions to the letter.

This successful proposal was written by Donna Fernandez for Dallas Can! Academy and its sister schools located in Austin, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antoniol Donna successfully wrote over $10 million in grants and e-rate requests during the two years she wrote grants for Texans Can! charter schools.

21st Century Community Learning Center - Kingsport
Connie Rose shares this successful proposal with us. It is a collaborative 21st Century Community Learning Center grant project in Tennessee between John F. Kennedy Elementary School and Boys and Girls Club of Greater Kingsport.

Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP)
Linda Beason and Diane Morton with "The Write Stuff" in Hammon, OK wrote this proposal that was awarded funding in September 2003.

When Linda sent the successful proposal to me, she added the following words of advice for PEP grantseekers:

"One thing about this grant that I believe is very important is NOT asking for personnel (not an allowable cost).  When there are so many applicants, it is important to carefully follow the guidelines.  Also sustainability is an important issue. I also think having strong partners helped us even though they didn't ask for them."

Improving Literacy Through School Libraries
Jan Krygier, Director of Grant Management Services for etc. Accounting and Management, Inc., shares this successful Improving Literacy Through School Libraries proposal written for Masada Charter School.

Please note that the school was asked to adjust their proposed budget request prior to receiving the grant award. Therefore, the budget included in the proposal does not represent the final award.

Reading First (Montana)
Amy Burland, Program Coordinator for Dixon School in Dixon, MT, generously shares a successful Reading First proposal with the SchoolGrants community.

Dixon Elementary is a small K-8 school with 75 students and is located in western Montana on the Flathead Indian Reservation.

The Montana Reading First program requires projects to use specific materials. Schools that substituted textbook programs that were not included among those the state lists as being scientifically research-based did not receive grants. The required approach is totally textbook-driven.

McKinney-Vento Homeless Program
Placerville Union School District shares this successful 3-year grant for the McKinney-Vento Homeless program with SchoolGrants. Placerville Union School District is a K-8 district in Northern California with approximately 1,300 students. The grant was awarded after a successful one-year special effort and is part of a collaboration effort with the 21st Century Community Learning Center.

A great deal of the success of this program is attributed to a wonderful coordinator who believes strongly in the project and who ensures it is a vital part of other programs at the district. The Homeless program (along with a variety of others) is included in regular quarterly 21CCLC collaborative meetings.

A very special thanks goes to Nancy Van Leuven who wrote this grant for Placerville Union School District and who obtained permission for publicizing it.

Teaching American History Program
Nina Wright with Texas State University-San Marcos shares this successful Teaching American History proposal. The program, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, is a collaborative effort between a school district and the university.

Texas State University-San Marcos has a wonderful history department that would love the opportunity to collaborate with other school districts who are seeking funds through this grant. As more and more federal grants are requiring collaboration between PK-12 and universities - this could be a wonderful partnership opportunity for you. Teaching American History Program (Texas)

Susan Dandridge, Grants Coordinator for Chesterfield County Public Schools in Richmond, VA, also generously shares her district's successful Teaching American History grant with the SchoolGrants community. For this program, Chesterfield County Public Schools is partnering with the Virginia Historical Society, Jamestown Island, Colonial Williamsburg and the National Park Service to provide three yearlong Teaching American History Project (TAHP) Institutes for 120 – 6th, 7th, and 11th grade U.S. History teachers. Members of the faculties of the Departments of History of the College of William and Mary, the University of Richmond, and Virginia Commonwealth University are also involved in the professional development program.

Susan said that their first application for funding was not approved. They received good feedback from the reviewers and incorporated many of the suggestions in this proposal which was funded. Her message to all of us: Keep Trying!!
