School
Improvement Implementation Grant |
Dr.
Jim Boyd contributed this grant proposal that was submitted to Georgia's
Department of Education. An important part of Georgia's
comprehensive school improvement strategy is awarding grants for school
improvement to local school systems and consortia of local school systems
and RESAs. These competitive grants maintain the high degree of
flexibility and the concept of local decision making that is the
cornerstone of Georgia's school improvement initiatives. Planning grants,
professional development grants, preservice education grants and
implementation grants have been awarded. This program was supported
through the use of funds provided through the United States Department of
Education's Goals 2000: Educate America Act.
This application is approximately 16 pages in length (double-spaced). You
may download the entire document in PDF format by clicking here. |

Repair and Renovation Grants |
|
In December 2000, Texas Education
Agency, the state public education agency that oversees elementary and
secondary education, received approximately $95 million from the federal
government under Public Law 106-554. The federal funds were used to
provide grant competitions in three areas:
-
to help local education agencies
make urgently needed repairs and renovations to school buildings;
-
to use for technology activities
related to school renovation; and
-
for activities authorized under Part
B of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
Every state received one-time funding
for these programs through the U.S. Department of Education.
In Texas, permissible uses of the funds
under the School Repair and Renovation competition were:
-
Emergency repairs or renovation to
public school facilities only to ensure the health and safety of
students and staff, including
-
repairing, replacing or
installing roofs, electrical wiring, plumbing systems, or sewage
systems;
-
repairing, replacing or
installing heating, ventilation, or air conditioning systems
(including insulation); and
-
bringing public schools into
compliance with fire and safety codes.
-
Modifications to public school
facilities necessary for compliance with the Americans with
Disabilities Act of 1990;
-
Modifications to public school
facilities necessary for compliance with section 504 of the
Rehabilitation Act of 1973;
-
Asbestos abatement or removal from
public school facilities;
-
Renovation, repair, and acquisition
needs (including lease or purchase) related to the building
infrastructure of a charter school.
Two proposals of the four successful proposals, written
by Donna Fernandez for open-enrollment charter schools
in Texas, are shared here. Dallas Can! Academy's proposal is
for the acquisition of a new facility. San Antonio Can!
Academy's proposal was awarded funds needed to make ADA modifications. If
you need grant writing assistance, you can contact Donna Fernandez by
calling (469) 235-7257 or by writing to SchoolGrants, P.O. Box 4431,
Dallas, TX 75208. You can also
